Windsurfing: Ynyslas Wind Direction: SW-WNW Wind Stength: 15-35 knots Surf / Sea State: 3 foot rough surf Air Temperature: 6ºC Sea Temperature: 8ºC Weather: Squally showers Max Speed: Distance Covered:
Wind looked good so I walked across to the beach with my 4.5m and 5.6m sail
as it looked like perfect 5m weather but I don't have a 5m at the
moment.
The waves looked pretty gnarly and the 4.5m would only just be enough so I
rigged the 5.6 and put loads of downhaul on it. Just as I finished rigging
an almighty squall came through and the wind went ballistic, probably 40
knots so I sat that one out and got on the water as it eased off, but I was
still completely maxed out with the 5.6m.
After a while the wind eased a little and I was more comfortable, but then
it swung around to the NW a little, so after sailing out to sea on port
tack in a SW and then back in on starboard tack on a NNW I was miles
upwind. Not to worry as my next run saw the wind drop off even more so it
was a bit of a downwinder back to the estuary mouth, when another massive
squall hit and the wind swung back to SW... Now I was miles downwind and
struggling to waterstart with far too big a sail. Once on the board though
I was able to head way upwind to just about get back to where I started
from. At which point the wind dropped again.
The sailing was good and the waves were fun to play on too. Some nice jumps
and some nice wave rides, but the weather was foul with driving rain and
hail and the wind was gusty and unpredictable. Good fun though.
